Disgusted with most of our politicians, Republican or Democrat, I recently sat back and did a lot of reading, thinking, and praying. More than ever, I now fear that we are largely rudderless, adrift in humanistic "meisms", destined to sink into oblivion in an amoral sea of globalism.
Why?
America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.
Although some question the attribution of this quote to Alexis de Toqueville, I believe it to be seminal, defining the cause of the decline of a still great and mostly unique land and political system. We have not “ceased to be good” but are quickly headed in that direction.
How do we get back to American exceptionalism? Wayne Grudem says it best in Politics According to the Bible: A Comprehensive Resource for Understanding Modern Political Issues in Light of Scripture:
Genuine, long-term change in a nation will only happen (1) if people’s hearts change so that they seek to do good, not evil; (2) if people’s minds change so that their moral convictions align more closely with God’s moral standards in the Bible; and (3) if a nation’s laws change so that they more fully encourage good conduct and punish wrong conduct.
In my own words, we’ve got to get back to an absolute morality. If we stupidly make morality relative, everyone is right which can only lead to disaster. In coming days, much of my political effort will be directed at getting believers and leaders in our Judeo-Christian heritage to once again take strong, public stands in the political arena.
